NIH Program Project: Radiation Bystander Effects: Mechanisms

The Center research program project grant entitled “Radiation Bystander Effects: Mechanism” is currently in its 17th year of funding. First started in 1988 and entitled “Radiation Biology of Simulated Radon-daughter Alphas”, the program was initially stimulated by a strong national interest in radon contamination in homes. The subsequent development of the Columbia single-particle microbeam facilitated experiments designed to address basic issues relating to this problem. In the intervening decade, research focus shifted from radon based risk assessment to the characterization and mechanism of the more general radiation induced bystander effect. Research performed at the Center figured prominently in the BEIR VI Report entitled “Health Effects of Exposure to Radon” and other national and international policy documents.
