JOINT RADIATION SAFETY/RADIOISOTOPE COMMITTEE


Joint Radioisotope Committee approved by Executive Committee of Medical Board as a Standing Committee on February 7, 1950. Joint Radiation Safety Committee approved by Executive Committee of Medical Board as a Standing Committee on April 7, 1965. Combined into one Standing Committee through action of Medical Board on October 23, 1990.

STATEMENT OF CHARGE TO COMMITTEE:

1. Includes all aspects of the protection against ionizating radiation throughout the Medical Center, including the licensing functions, that must be conducted since the Medical Center has been granted the authority to license.

2. Carried out primarily through the operation and supervision of the Radiation Safety Office, College of Physicians and Surgeons.

3. To fulfill the legal requirement that institutions have a committee supervising the use of radionuclides in medicine. The governmental authority involved (state, local, or whatever) license the application of radioactive materials to humans, only on the basis of a communication from such a committee.

4. Voting members of this committee shall include: Directors of Radiation Oncology, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Pharmacy, representatives from Medical Affairs Administration, Dean's Office, physicians from the various clinical services and others as deemed appropriate by the chairperson.

5. Meets quarterly.

6. Reports annually to Medical Board.
