CUMC Collaborative Research

Our goal is to lead a sustainable program of education research/scholarship through collaboration and consultation. Our focus is on supporting Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) teaching faculty in their investigations of a broad range of issues including instruction, learning, cognition, and program evaluation.

Activities include training, mentoring, and collaboration with CUMC faculty to:

  • Design research
  • Utilize statistical methods
  • Analyze data
  • Create a culture of scholarship in medical/health science education

CERE Independent Research

Our focus is also geared towards designing our own independent research projects that advance the field of health science education.

Activities include:

  • Goals and motivation during residency
  • Effects of grades on learning and anxiety
  • The activity of studying for high stakes exams

Intra-Institutional Research

We intend to translate and integrate the rich intellectual resources of Columbia University at large back to CUMC faculty, residents, and health science students through collaborative projects involving faculty experts from Teachers College and the Morningside Campus.

For example, we coordinate a fellowship program (administered by a grant from theTeagle Foundation) that will bring together faculty from both Columbia University and CUMC in education and psychological science research.  Program participants will convene regularly with faculty experts to:

  • Discuss recent research in brain processes, memory, and cognitive development
  • Explore ways to enhance course design and teaching methods based on neuroscience and education research
  • Consider innovative techniques for the assessment of student learning
