All graduating residents in the past 20 years have passed the boards on their first attempt.

Is there an opportunity to participate in research?

The department endeavors to create an atmosphere of intellectual curiosity and is delighted to support individuals who express an interest in pursuing academic research.  A multitude of opportunities for research exist within the department and the medical center.  The department has a very active Basic Science Research Program as well as a Clinic Trials section, which provide research opportunities for any interested residents.

Basic Science Research Group (BSRG)

The research facilities are located in completely reconstructed laboratories on the 15th floor of the Vanderbilt Clinic.  The 10,000 square feet of state-of-the-art space includes contiguous laboratories with benches, smaller rooms for tissue culture and animal procedures, a facility for irradiation of cells and animals, and a suite for microscopy.  The BSRG also has an especially dedicated Photobiology Research Unit with complete light-opaque capabilities, state-of-the-art light sources and radiometers.  The research laboratories are also equipped with Macintosh and PC computers with fax and modem capabilities, which are fully networked with the Columbia University and Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center systems.  These are used for literature searches, DNA and protein sequence analysis, and image analysis.  In addition, the facility has a teaching/conference room for ongoing research seminars, lectures, and research meetings.  Residents are encouraged to consider fellowship training in research.

Is affordable housing available for residents?

Finding affordable housing in New York City can be challenging.  There is a “Real Estate Office” available to help residents find convenient and affordable   housing.  Because of our proximity to Westchester and Northern New Jersey, some residents have chosen to look for housing in these areas, as well.

Is moonlighting allowed?

Moonlighting is prohibited.

Will my USMLE scores determine if my application is reviewed or not reviewed?

All applications that are complete by the program deadline will be reviewed by the Resident Selection Committee regardless of USMLE Part 1 scores.
