About the Fellowship
The fellowship comprises one year (12 months) under the preceptorship of Dr. Richard E. Braunstein, Chief, Division of Anterior Segment, and Director of Laser Vision Correction. The fellowship is primarily patient care oriented with significant clinical research opportunities. This experience encompasses the clinical and research aspects of corneal disease, advanced cataract surgery, IOL complications, and refractive surgery for a highly motivated individual who has completed an accredited residency in Ophthalmology.

Fellowship Experience
One fellow is selected annually through SF Match. The fellow assists in the evaluation and surgery of private patients. The fellow will work in the faculty practice of different cornea attending physicians. The fellow will participate in faculty surgery including, cataract surgery, complicated IOL management, corneal transplantation, incisional and laser refractive surgery. In addition, the fellow will play an integral role in all resident cases involving corneal transplantation and refractive surgery.
Teaching Responsibilities
The cornea fellow will function as a clinical instructor/attending physician at Columbia University Medical Center, staffing resident clinics and assisting resident physicians in anterior segment surgery. The cornea fellow is directly responsible for supervising activities of the Cornea Clinic and directing the diagnostic workup of patients under the direction of corneal attending physicians.
The fellow will be expected to attend departmental conferences including Cornea lectures, Grand Rounds, and specialized meetings. In addition, the fellow will periodically present cases at Grand Rounds and will lecture in the resident lecture series.
Research Opportunities
Clinical research is an important part of the corneal fellowship. The fellow is expected to have at least one independent research project which would be suitable for presentation or publication. The fellow will review the project monthly with a Cornea faculty member to ensure that adequate resources are available and that there is reasonable progress.
