ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP

The Clinical Fellowship in Glaucoma is a one -year fellowship designed to provide comprehensive subspecialty training in glaucoma diagnosis, management, and surgery. The objectives of the program are to enhance the clinical subspecialty skills of the post-residency graduate in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma and to provide experience in clinical or basic glaucoma research.
The one year program is under the preceptorship of Dr. Lama Al-Aswad and Dr. Max Forbes at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology, Columbia University Medical Center and under the preceptorship of Dr. Rajendra Bansal at Harlem Medical Center.

One physician is selected annually through the Fellowship Matching Program. The Fellow assists in the medical and surgical care of the attendings' private patients, as well as participating fully in the care of glaucoma clinic patients at the Harkness Eye Institute and Harlem Medical Center. The Fellow will be involved in and perform a wide variety of glaucoma and anterior segment surgical procedures throughout the year. In addition, the Fellow is responsible for participating in teaching activities and supervising the resident laser clinics. The Fellow is encouraged to carry out at least one research project leading to publication and to present his/her research findings at local, regional and national conferences and meetings.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Research opportunities are available in both clinical and basic science areas at Columbia and Harlem. Potential projects include clinical outcome trials in glaucoma surgery, trials of new medical therapies, and basic science research involving neuroprotection and optic nerve degeneration. Affiliated faculty preceptors are also available. 

OTHER ISSUES

Travel expenses for presentations at academic conferences are generally covered with approval from the preceptor.

  • Download and print the application form
  • Application materials must be submitted by SFMatch due date.
  • After the completed application has been received and reviewed by the Fellowship Committee. Candidates will be contacted for interviews.  Interviews are normally held in October or November.
