One Fellow is selected annually through the Fellowship Matching Program. The first six months is spent with Dr. Yannuzzi and colleagues, the next 12 months with Dr. Chang and colleagues, and the final six months again with Dr. Yannuzzi and colleagues. The Fellow assists in the examination and surgery of private patients, participates in the teaching and surgical care of patients in Retina Clinics, and is expected to attend local, regional and national conferences and meetings. At each site, there may be International Fellows who share some of the clinical responsibilities but do not rotate to the opposite site.
During the two years, it is expected that the Fellow will have acted as primary surgeon in at least 400 vitreoretinal surgeries, 100-200 laser procedures and in at least one research project leading to publication.
The portion of the vitreoretinal fellowship experience at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital is primarily oriented around a clinical experience, with direct patient care for both medical retina and surgical retinal diseases. The retina Fellow is directly responsible for supervising activities of the retina clinic, directing the diagnostic workup of patients, including the interpretation of fluorescein and indocyanine green angiographic studies, as well as B-scan ultrasound examination. Fellows are the primary surgeons for all clinic cases under the supervision of an attending on the vitreoretinal service at the hospital.
This experience is supplemented by direct involvement with the private practice of the Vitreous, Retina, and Macula Consultants of New York. Fellows spend at least three half days at the private practice offices with direct patient contact. In addition, there is a Tuesday morning vitreoretinal conference under the direction of Dr. Yannuzzi, which involves discussion of interesting and complex medical retinal cases.
