Clinical Trials for Patients with Liver Diseases

Gabapentin for the Treatment of Itch Due to Liver Disease

At present, we are conducting a NIH-funded double blind, placebo-controlled study on the use of the drug gabapentin for the treatment of the itch due to liver disease (IRB Protocol #9618). Study participants will be evaluated in the outpatient facility of the Irving Center for Clinical Investigation at the New York Presbyterian Hospital Columbia-Presbyterian Center in New York City. Once eligibility status is confirmed, participants will be admitted for baseline evaluation of itch before and after completion of the four week treatment period. There are some travel funds available for participants from outside the tri-state area.

All participants must be referred by their physician, who will continue to render medical care. The physicians will receive a summary of the participant's results at the end of the treatment phase.
