From the Airports to the City and our Lab
Laguardia is the airport closest to our lab, and the only one that we
recommend that you take a taxi cab from straight to our lab (unless you're on
an expense account). The cab fare will probably run between ~$20-25, including
the bridge toll. A much cheaper alternative is to take the
M60 city bus from Laguardia (stops right outside most terminals, runs every
~30 min) to Columbia's main campus. The bus fare is $1.50, which you have to
pay in coins or using a token (same as for the subway). From Columbia's main
campus (located at 116th St. and Broadway), you can either take the 1/9 subway
line (red) uptown to the Columbia-Presbytarian Medical Center (see instructions
for the subway below), or you can take a cab. The cab fare between the two campuses
runs between ~$6-8.
Newark is the airport furthest away from the city, but often faster
to get to/from than JFK. The AirTrain
is probably the most convenient method of getting into New York. Other
transportation options include shared vans and the Olympia Trails Bus. The
Bus will bring you to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. From the bus terminal
you can take the subway, preferrably the A (blue) line, which is an express
train, and is located closer to the bus terminal than the 1/9 line. Another
alternative is to take a cab from the Port Authority, which will cost you ~$15.
J.F. Kennedy. The fixed rate taxi cab fare from JFK is $35.00 plus tolls
($3.50) and tips (15%). You should get a cab at the designated taxi stand at
the airport (follow the signs). Alternatively, take the Carey bus to Grand Central
station. The fare is about $12. From Grand Central, your most convenient option
is to take a cab to our lab. The fare will probably be ~$10-15. The less convenient
alternative is to walk across the street to Grand Central, find the "cross-town
shuttle" subway line (S, black), take this to Times Square/42nd St., transfer
to the 1/9 line uptown (or walk a bit further in the tunnels under Times Square
and transfer to the A line, which runs express).

How to get to our lab by Subway
Subway map
The subway stop closest to our lab is the 168th St. - Broadway station on either the 1/9 (red) or A/B (blue) lines, located way up north (uptown) in Manhattan.
If you take the 1/9 line: You will have to take the elevator to the
street level. As you step out of the elevator, turn left, exit thru
the gates, and continue in the same direction up the stairs.
This will take you to the 168th st/Broadway
corner, where you turn left and walk west along 168th st. At the other end
of this block is the Black Building (that is William Black -- the
building isn't colored black), where our lab is located.
Unclear? Take a look at this
map.
If you take the A/B line: Follow the signs to the 1/9 line (transfer),
until you get to the gates by the elevators. Then follow directions above
for the 1/9.
