The Insert

The Insert is a section of the Vector devoted to the activities and goings about of the Graduate Student Organization. This section was written by Alan Dove. Comments or suggestions should be directed to the e-mail form.

The GSO has been busy lately, mostly with shows and outings (the latter being trips to various places, not the activity of publicizing the sexual preferences of prominent figures). In addition, our annual barbecue is coming up in June, and a few other activities aimed at serving you better are in the offing.

Shows and Outings

In March, Tiffani Cook organized a trip to see Cirque du Soleil, and after debating whether it should be "du" or "de," the 40 people who attended had a great time. As usual with such events, tickets sold out almost instantly, and the price was incredibly reasonable. Other shows this spring included a trip to Stomp, organized by Mike Beck, and tickets to Hamlet starring Ralph Fiennes and organized by Judy Masucci. Mike Beck also led outings to two chamber music concerts, which would easily have been worth paying full price to see.

In this category, the upcoming events include tickets to see the Kirov Ballet (organized by Sophia Sarafova), a trip to the Cloisters for the annual Medieval Fair (no organizer yet, but we're searching), and an outing to the new IMAX film, Wings of Courage, which may be organized by Ben Lewin (the student, not the editor of Cell).

More Electronic Connections

Always on the frontier of the Information Age, the GSO has now set up an email mailing list. There are around 30 people on the list now, and if you want to contact all of them simultaneously, you can send mail to gso@columbia.edu. The list is mainly for those students who show up to meetings occasionally and are actually interested in the day-to-day minutiae of the GSO. For the rest of the students, who simply want to know what's going on next, we soon hope to have a Web page up and running. If you don't know what a Web page is, you can legally classify yourself as technologically challenged, and may qualify for a tax break. Ricky Sucgang will be working on assembling the page, but inside sources have suggested that he would welcome any help, as his spare time now consists of the 15 minutes between walking into his apartment and falling asleep. Ben Lewin is responsible for maintaining the mailing list, and you can reach him at gso-request@columbia.edu.

Officer Turnovers and Peach Cobbler

The GSO has undergone a major change of management lately, so please pardon our mess. Sara McGee resigned from the position of Chair, and Mike Livstone replaced her. Mike has been doing an excellent job of keeping the meetings under control - no small task with this group. Ben Lewin has quit his post as Scribe, and has been replaced by Mike Beck, whose minutes are always on time. Leora Hamberger is still the Treasurer, and Sophia Sarafova is still the Vice Chair, but they are considering changing their names to Mike for the sake of consistency.

As always, the GSO Wednesday movie series will continue through the summer, even when everything else shuts down. The Summer schedule will be posted in the bulletin board in the lobby of Hammer.
