time=1221081658953). The ICM manages the Columbia University’s animal facilities. The mission of the ICM is to ensure the humane care of animals used in research and to support medical research teams working to develop treatments for life threatening conditions.
The Director reports to the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and is part of a senior management team dedicated to maintaining Columbia University’s prominent position in biomedical research.
The Director is responsible for animal care at Columbia University in an AAALAC accredited program with the following resources:
- A highly motivated veterinary team that includes board certified specialists;
- A 130-person operations staff;
- An ACLAM accredited Residency Program in Comparative Medicine; and
- An ACVP accredited Residency Program in Veterinary Pathology.
The Director will provide strong and creative leadership to ensure best practices in:
- Staff management
- Medical and surgical programs
- Training of staff and researchers
- Quarantine and bio-surveillance programs
- Participation in IACUC activities
- Strategic facility design and planning
- Budget strategies
- The ACLAM/ACVP residency programs
The candidates should have:
- ACLAM board certification
- Senior experience of more than five years in a research animal facility
- Experience with modern rodent housing and techniques
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational and managerial skills
- Eligibility for a New York State Veterinary License.

Columbia University is seeking a highly motivated veterinary specialist for the position of Associate Director of the Institute of Comparative Medicine (ICM). The successful
candidate will lead a highly qualified team of ACLAM certified
veterinary specialists.
ICM is responsible for animal care at Columbia University, and with
120 personnel manages an AAALAC accredited program. The Associate Director will ensure the implementation of best-practice throughout ICM including
- ensuring compliance with regulatory policies and AAALAC guidelines
- management, direction and training of ICM staff
- provision of training to researchers
- oversight of ICM medical and surgical programs
- direction of a bio-surveillance program
- participation in IACUC activities
- involvement in strategic facility design and planning
- provision of services to researchers in a courteous fashion
- management of the ACLAM accredited residency program
and other duties as directed by the ICM Director.
The Associate Director reports to the Director of ICM and directly manages a Chief of Medicine; Chief of Veterinary Services; a Chief of Comparative Pathology; Clinical Veterinarians (3); and a Facility Operations Manager. Opportunities for collaborative research and an academic appointment are available for suitably qualified personnel.
This position is likely to suit a veterinarian with:
* A veterinary degree from an AVMA-accredited institution
* ACLAM Board certification
* 5 years experience with an animal research program
* Eligibility for a New York State Veterinary License.

Clinical Veterinarian in Comparative Medicine
The Institute of Comparative Medicine (ICM) at Columbia University is seeking a highly motivated veterinarian with at least one year clinical experience in laboratory animal medicine. ICM veterinarians are an integral and highly regarded component of the biomedical research effort at Columbia University. You would work closely with veterinary and medical specialists as part of a multi-doctor team managing several species in a biomedical environment. ICM's role is multi-disciplinary and encompasses veterinary care of multiple species; resident and researcher training; provision of regulatory advice; and teaching and research.
