Center for Parkinson Disease & Other Movement Disorders CUMC NINY

Mission Statement

The Center for Parkinson's Disease and Other Movement Disorders

is a premier clinical and research center of movement disorders. We provide diagnosis and treatment for patients with Parkinson's disease, dystonia, tremors, ataxia, chorea, Tourette syndrome, myoclonus, blepharospasm, and many uncommon movement disorders.

Our center is one of the largest and oldest divisions of the Department of Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center. The Parkinson Clinic was started by Dr. Lewis Doshay in the 1950's. At the time, treatments for Parkinson's disease were limited, but Dr. Doshay introduced many of the anticholinergic drugs which continue to be useful for the treatment of tremor and dystonia. After his retirement, the Clinic was headed by Dr. Melvin Yahr, an internationally renowned clinician, who left to become Chairman of Neurology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in 1973. At that time, Dr. Stanley Fahn, a pioneering clinician-researcher in the field, became the scientific director of the division. The Center was re-named the Center for Parkinson's Disease and Other Movement Disorders to reflect the inclusion of related disorders that cause abnormal involuntary movements. Over the decades, the Center has become a premier clinical and research movement disorders center. The Center serves the population of the greater New York City region and accepts patients and referrals from all over the world.
