1. Spotlight on a Faculty Researcher: Dr. Mary Byrne

NEW! Each CUSON ORR Newsletter will be highlighting the recent achievements and activities of one of our faculty researchers. This Newsletter shines the spotlight on Mary W. Byrne, Ph.D., MPH, FAAN, Stone Foundation and Elise D. Fish Professor for Clinical Health Care of the Underserved. Holding advanced degrees in public health, nursing, and pediatric primary care nursing practice, Dr. Byrne is interested in transdisciplinary and inter-professional approaches to assessing and intervening with vulnerable parent-infant dyads in the earliest years of life. Currently funded by NIH to study parenting and child outcomes in a prison nursery, she also teaches masters and doctoral students, participates in interdisciplinary work groups to improve practice through research, and is active in national and international professional organizations. Awards
Dr. Byrne has been named to the Stone Foundation and Elise D. Fish Professorship in Clinical Health Care for the Underserved. This appointment was enthusiastically endorsed by the faculty committee of full professors in the school, and by the health sciences and University. This professorship was funded by the Stone Foundation, through the advocacy of alumna and Board of Visitors member Sally Stone, and through a gift from Elise Fish, also an alumna. Care of the underserved may be the most daunting health challenge we have in this country, and Professor Byrne has been a pioneer in establishing the science to address those most vulnerable, infants and toddlers, who have been her dedicated mission for many years.

The New York Zero-to-Three Network has also selected Dr. Byrne as the first recipient ever of the annual Emily Fenichel Award for Leadership in the Zero-to-Three Field in New York. Dr. Byrne is recognized for her exemplary contributions to infants and toddlers through practice, research, leadership, and advocacy. The Award is given in memory of the former Associate Director of The National Center for Infants, Toddlers and Families.

Dr. Byrne also received the New York State Nurses Association Distinguished Nurse Researcher Award for 2007. Sponsored by the Foundation of NYSNA, the award recognizes excellence in nursing research by NYSNA members.

Finally, the Audrey Hepburn Award for Contributions to the Health and Welfare of Children, an International Award for Excellence, was presented to Dr. Byrne for her significant contributions to the health and well being of children. The award was presented at Sigma Theta Tau International biennial convention following an introduction by Mr. Robert Wolders, long time companion of Audrey Hepburn and a Director of the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund and its program for UNICEF.

Presentations and Publications
Dr. Byrne presented at the 12th National Workshop on Adult and Juvenile Female Offenders, Association on Programs for Female Offenders, on October 23, 2007 in Baltimore, MD. With Lorie Goshin, RN, MS, DNSc candidate and Community Coordinator for Dr. Byrne's current RO1 project, she presented, "What does a Nurse Practitioner intervention add to a prison nursery program and to the reentry transition?" She also organized and chaired a panel, "Successful reentry of women and children: 'Against all odds," which included presentations by Ms. Lorie Goshin, Dr. Gina Hijjawi of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, Mary Hughes, Esq., Deputy District Attorney and Confidential Assistant to the District Attorney, and Teresa Fabi, Esq., Deputy District Attorney and Chief, Crime Prevention, both at the Kings County District Attorney's Office.

Dr. Byrne also sponsored Ms. Lorie Goshin, DNSc candidate and Ms. Sarah Joestl, MPH, DrPH student to attend the American Public Health Association annual meeting in November in Washington DC and present a co-authored poster (Byrne, Goshin, Joestl, and Bond), "Drug factors and interrupted attachment following reentry from a prison nursery". On behalf of co-authors (Byrne, Evan, Goshin, Erlich, Hsiao, Katz, Saroyan & Zeltzer), Dr. Byrne presented their paper, "Parental self-efficacy and caregiver strain in caring for seriously ill children" at the International Nursing Congress, Sigma Theta Tau International, in July in Vienna, Austria.
