5. Awards and Accolades

  • Drs. Arlene Smaldone, Mary Byrne, and Judy Honig collaborated on a project using a large national data set to explore the needs of New York State children with special health care needs. The collaboration resulted in an article, “Delayed and Forgone Care for Children with Special Health Care Needs in New York State ,” which was selected via competitive review from papers submitted nationally for a special edition of Maternal and Child Health Journal. Dr. Smaldone, who graduated from the CUSON DNSc program in 2003, is first author on the article and recently joined CUSON as a faculty member. The article was subsequently selected from the published papers for a small group presented in webcast on MCHCOM.COM, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau’s forum for communicating with State Title V Maternal and Child Health and Children with Special Health Care Needs Directors.

  • Diane Pastor, DNSc(c) won Best Student Presentation at the ENRS Scientific Sessions (see:"CUSON Hosts the 17th Annual Scientific Sessions of the Eastern Nursing Research Society")

  • Leanne Currie, RN, DNSC and Diane Pastor, RN, MBA, DNSc(c) were Research Award winners at the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing induction ceremony

  • Dr. Mary Byrne, Dr. Anne Peirce, and Dr. Jennifer Dohrn have been named to the first class of the Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy at CUMC. The Garvey Academy recognizes and supports members of the faculty who are devoted to the teaching mission in the College of Physicians & Surgeons, the School of Dental and Oral Surgery, the Mailman School of Public Health, the School of Nursing , and the graduate program. The mission of the Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy is to recognize excellence, reward achievement, and promote innovation in education of health professionals. The founding class of the Garvey Academy has 12 members – 3 from each school.
