6. CUSON Hosts the 17th Annual Scientific Sessions of the Eastern Nursing Research Society (ENRS)

The 2005 ENRS 17th Annual Scientific Sessions entitled, “Translational Research for Quality Health Outcomes: Affecting Practice and Healthcare Policy,” sponsored by CUSON, was held April 7-9, 2005 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City, and the meeting was a resounding success (Visit the meeting web site). The Conference Planning Group with both faculty and student members included Suzanne Bakken, Gina Bufe, Leanne Currie, Elaine Larson, Jackie Merrill, Anne Peirce, Arlene Smaldone and was chaired by Patricia Stone, and the Continuing Education Committee was chaired by Sarah Cook. For the first time, the conference will live on through a Nursing Research Supplement. This publication is funded by an AHRQ dissemination grant which was awarded to Dr. Elaine Larson. Drs. Suzanne Bakken and Dorothy Jones will invite selected speakers and co-edit this publication, which will be available in April, 2006. Including the AHRQ grant, the planning group raised over $100,000 to help make the conference a smashing success.

The conference was attended by 500 nurse researchers and students from this region and beyond who participated in the multiple, informative sessions that increased their research knowledge, offered opportunities to network with the experts, and provided time to celebrate individual and group accomplishments. Drs. Bobbie Berkowitz and Kristine Gebbie were but two of the featured speakers who provided new insights into the many dimensions of translational research. Nine pre-conference workshops were well attended and offered participants a chance to engage in dialogue, and access new knowledge about nursing science and related research methodologies. Sponsored events such as University Nursing School receptions, the Deans and Directors Breakfast, a Doctoral Student session and Research Interest Groups meetings gave members an opportunity to discuss issues of personal and professional interest.  Through-out the meeting CUSON faculty and students participated, and Diane Pastor, a doctoral candidate at CUSON, was awarded the Best Student Presentation.
