7. CIRAR Hosts Symposium, “The Global Problem of Antimicrobial Resistance: Clinical, Policy, and Social Implications”
In July, over 200 CUMC, NYPH, and other area guests attended the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Antimicrobial Resistance (PI: Dr. Elaine Larson) Symposium, "The Global Problem of Antimicrobial Resistance: Clinical, Policy, and Social Implications" which was co-sponsored by the New York Academy of Sciences. CIRAR welcomed guest speaker Dr. Stuart Levy, President of Alliance for Prudent Use of Antibiotics (APUA). Dr. Levy's talk was followed by a reaction panel consisting of the CIRAR's External Advisory Board of national experts: Marcelle Layton, MD, Assistant Commissioner, Bureau of Communicable Diseases, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; Barbara J. McNeil, MD, PhD, Professor and Head, Department of Health Care Policy, Harvard Medical School; and Michele Pearson, MPH , MD, Deputy Chief of the Prevention and Evaluation Branch, Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, National Center for Infectious Diseases, CDC. In addition to Dr. Levy’s talk on the global problem of antimicrobial resistance, other topics included local public health perspectives on antimicrobial resistance, issues with promoting guidelines for proper use of antibiotics, and CDC activities and programs related to antimicrobial resistance.
