5. Awards and Accolades

  • The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) named Suzanne Bakken, DNSc, RN, as recipient of the 2006 Virginia K. Saba Informatics Award. This prestigious award recognizes an individual’s distinguished career with significant impact permeating the care of patients and the discipline of nursing, and honors a professional with exemplary principles and practices and a substantial record of contribution to the field of nursing informatics.
  • In October 2006, Dr. Suzanne Bakken was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine (IOM), one of the highest honors in the fields of medicine and health. The IOM, part of the National Academies, is unique in its role as both an honorific membership group and advisory organization. Dr. Bakken is one of only 48 members from Columbia University who have been elected to the IOM.
  • Dr. Bakken was also selected as one of the 100 most distinguished alumni of the University of California-San Francisco School of Nursing.
  • Arlene Smaldone, DNSc, CPNP , Assistant Professor of Nursing, was invited to present at the February 2007 DataSpeak Internet audio conference series entitled, “New Findings from the National Survey of Children’s Health.” The conference was sponsored by the MCH Information Resource Center , funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. Dr. Smaldone presented, “Sleepless in America : Inadequate Sleep and Relationships to Health and Well-being of Our Nation’s Children.” Dr. Mary Byrne and Dr. Judy Honig also co-authored a manuscript with Dr. Smaldone: Smaldone A, Honig J, Byrne M. Sleepless in America : Inadequate Sleep and Relationships to the Health and Well-being of Children. Pediatrics 2007;119(Suppl 1):S29-37.
  • Sookyung Hyun, DNSc , Associate Research Scientist, won the Harriet H. Werley Award for her paper on nursing informatics at the American Medical Informatics Association annual meeting. This award has been won by a Columbia nurse four times in the past six years.
  • Kristine M. Gebbie, DrPH, RN , the Elizabeth Standish Gill Associate Professor of Nursing, was named to the health policy advisory committee for New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s transition office.
  • Rachel Lyons, MS, PNP , is 2006 winner of the CampusRN/AACN Scholarship. Ms. Lyons, enrolled in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DrNP) program, plans to build on her pediatric nursing experience as she trains for advanced practice nursing.
  • 1st year DNSc student Rebecca Schnall, RN, MPH, MBA has won the American College of Legal Medicine's 2007 Hirsch Award for Outstanding Writing by a student in dentistry, podiatry, nursing, pharmacy, health science, health care administration, or public health. Her paper, "The Ethical implications of decision-making for the treatment of extremely premature infants at the threshold of viability", was written for her CUSON course, “N9600 Legal and Ethical Issues in Advanced Nursing Practice,” with Drs. Nancy Reame and Anne Peirce as co-instructors.
