Curriculum
The Sloane Hospital Residency is a four-year parallel program with five residents in each year. Recent changes include more endoscopic surgery, minimal access surgery, elective time, reproductive endocrinology & infertility, and ultrasound. Laparoscopic surgery is taught throughout the four-year rotation and is especially intense during the third and fourth year. Pathology education is incorporated into the gynecology rotations with specific emphasis in oncology.
Each resident is also provided with two textbooks upon entering the residency program and additionally throughout the program. All residents are required to act as teachers and role models for medical students. We are in compliance with the 80-hour maximum work schedule for our residents. We believe this has improved our program and the quality of life for our residents. In 1981 a system of longitudinal continuity was started in our outpatient obstetric and gynecology clinics.
Each year, Residents receive a one-month vacation. In addition, the Department sponsors each resident to attend one national educational conference during the four years of residency training.
This program is a high volume, high intensity program in which the educational experiences are rich and aimed at providing maximum exposure to clinical obstetrics and gynecology. Our goal is to provide an educational experience sufficient to allow the graduate to choose either a career in a clinical practice or an academic pathway.
Note: We are in the process of changing the yearly summaries listed below. Please check back soon for updated information.
First Year
Entrants into the first year may either be in their first year of post-graduate training or, having completed internships, be entering their second year of postgraduate training. All first year residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology will have several months of obstetrics and gynecology. The rotational assignments are designed to provide the fundamentals in obstetrical and gynecological diagnosis and treatment, including an opportunity to learn basic operative procedures. In addition, the other rotations include Surgical ICU, Ultrasound, Night Float and Family Planning/Geriatrics.
Second Year
Five residents are appointed for the second year in which increased clinical responsibilities are given. The opportunity is offered for carrying out more advanced obstetrical and gynecological procedures. The second year rotation will include; Gynecology Benign and Oncology, Endocrinology, Obstetrics Floor and Labor Room, Night Float and Ultrasound.
Third Year
Appointments for the five spaces on the Residency Staff are again usually made from those who have satisfactorily completed their second year. Individuals who have had equivalent work in other institutions may also be considered as candidates if an occasional vacancy develops in the program. The third year Rotation schedule includes Benign Gynecology, High-Risk Obstetrics, OB/GYN Consult, Emergency Room, Night Labor Room, Reproductive Endocrinology and a one-month elective, either away or in-house.
Time in the four year is devoted to care of and supervision of patients on all Gynecological and Obstetrical Services. The resident is responsible for the management of each service. The rotational schedule includes Gynecology - Benign and Oncology, Labor Room and Floor Obstetrics, Reproductive Endocrinology and Night Float.
Graduation Requirements
Residents are required to participate in an original research project upon graduation to be presented at our Sloane Academic Assembly held annually in June. They also have the option to write a paper or prepare a presentation for a major meeting.
