My experience in Nicaragua reaffirmed the importance of practicing OT in a cross-cultural setting. The people lacked the awareness that OT services could help improve some of the circumstances that their children are growing up in; OT can foster fruitful developmental growth. The experience also illuminated the complex nature of practicing OT in a cross-cultural setting. The first obvious component to practicing OT in a cross-cultural setting is the language barrier; some terminology does not translate exactly the same in some cultures. In a cross cultural-setting it is even more important than ever to recognize the different roles that families play.

This trip to Cuba has opened my eyes to qualitative research. Observing and describing a culture can make a big impact on future occupational therapy research and treatment. Without this type of research, occupational therapy will not begin to develop in parts of the world that really need it. This trip has given me more insight as to how to be more aware of the activities I choose to use with my patients. I will remember to treat each person as an individual.

MiaMy trips to Haiti and Nicaragua have proven to me that OT has a vast array of tools to offer to the international arena. The most fundamental goal of OT, promoting participation, can be done ANYWHERE! As occupational therapists, we are flexible and adaptable, which is very important in trips like these, as we learn to work with few, if any, material resources. These skills help us to break down the whole into sub-components to identify where the needs lie and to formulate achievable goals for communities, organizations, and individuals. Practicing OT internationally guarantees challenges, lessons, rewards, and ultimately, an unforgettable experience!
