Gender Medicine, the official peer-reviewed journal of the Partnership for Gender-Specific Medicine at Columbia University , focuses on the impact of sex and gender on normal human physiology, and the pathophysiology and clinical features of disease. The journal serves an international multidisciplinary audience in a mixture of academic and clinical practice settings.

Specifically, Gender Medicine seeks to publish reports of original scientific investigations that use biological sex and/or gender as a significant variable in the experimental protocol. These include research that:

• Reports significant differences in the normal function of males and females.
• Identifies differences in the pathophysiology of disease as a function of biological sex/gender.
• Evaluates the efficacy of therapeutic interventions as a function of sex/gender.
• Develops protocols that translate the results of gender-specific investigations into clinical practice.

Gender Medicine welcomes original reports from the entire spectrum of academic disciplines devoted to the study of the human condition as it relates to both biological sex and the broader concept of gender. One of the most difficult tasks in gender medicine is to determine which phenomena are the results of biology and which are consequences of the environment. Therefore, the journal encourages scholars in disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, psychology, and other allied sciences to consider contributions to the journal.

The journal also encourages submission of brief reports, commentaries, and letters to the editor that address timely or provocative issues in gender-specific medicine, including cardiology, endocrinology, oncology, dermatology, public and health policy, infectious disease, geriatrics and aging, gastroenterology, and neurology.  

The journal is indexed in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, CINAHL, and others.

The journal Gender Medicine replaces the Journal of Gender-Specific Medicine, which is no longer published.

Principles of Gender-Specific Medicine explains how normal human biology differs between men and women and how the diagnosis and treatment of disease differs as a function of gender. This revealing new research covers various conditions that occur predominantly in men, and conditions that occur predominantly in women. Among the subjects covered are cardiovascular disease, mood disorders, the immune system, lung cancer as a consequence of smoking, osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity, and infectious disease.
