Cardiology

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology has an active research program:

1). Clinical research includes investigation of the natural history of congenital heart disease and how it is influenced by surgical and catheterization interventions.

2). The program in primary pulmonary hypertension in children is unique and patients from the United States and abroad take part in clinical trials under the auspices of the Pulmonary Artery Hypertension Center.

3). The Division has FDA sanction to carry out a number of device insertions by means of cardiac catheterization and vigorous investigative protocols are being carried out in this arena.

4). In preventive cardiology, the Division of Pediatric Cardiology, as a member of a national cooperative study, has published a number of papers relating to the effects of the HIV virus on the heart in infants and children.

5). General clinical studies involving electrophysiology, echocardiography, fetal echocardiography, and exercise are ongoing.

6). In the arena of basic research, a number of cooperative investigations are being carried out by our faculty with members of the Department of Pharmacology and Surgery.

7). A five-year Institutional Research Training Grant was awarded to the Division of Pediatric Cardiology.

The trainees accepted into our program are from the United States and also come to us from throughout the international medical community.
