Critical Care

Education is critical to the division's mission on a number of levels. Education extends from continuing education and collaborative educational sessions for the attending group, as well as all of the critical care fellows (see fellowship), residents from the Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, and Emergency Departments, medical students from Columbia University, all of our affiliated health care workers including pharmacologists, social workers, child life workers, and respiratory therapists. Additionally, the division oversees and supervises a sophisticated, critical care nurse practitioner program.

The division's members meet twice weekly as a group to cover diverse areas such as quality assurance/performance improvement, morbidity/mortality, and case conferences, as well as "chief rounds" held weekly at the bedside. Research conferences are weekly and cover both clinical and research laboratory studies with presentations weekly by our attendings and fellows. Research journal club is held weekly as well as a monthly clinical journal club. Joint meetings with the divisions of pediatric anesthesiology as well as pediatric emergency medicine are held quarterly. The division's members also participate in the weekly Critical Care Grand Rounds. The Department of Pediatrics Grand Rounds and Chief of Service Rounds are also weekly with frequent participation from the fellows and attendings either in a discussant or mentor (to the residents and medical students) role. The division is an active participant in the departmental educational website.

Other educational forums include weekly didactic series and a monthly Cardiac didactic series for the Critical Care fellows as well as regular didactic meetings for the nurse practitioners and residents on-service in the ICU rotation. Fellows also receive formal education in biostatistics and study design, ethical and legal aspects of critical illness, PICU administration, and scientific writing.
