The Trout in the Classroom Program (new link below), originated and inspired by Joan Stoliar (sponsored by Theodore Gordon Fly fishers Inc.), teaches New York students conservation, stewardship and science through the rearing of Brown Trout. Classes receive hatchery bred eggs in the fall. The students monitor the life cycle of the fish and the water quality until the end of the school year when they are released into an appropriate stream. Through the aqua culture of Salmo, trutta (Brown Trout) students discover the connections between aquatic systems, life cycles, water quality and drinking water.
I.S. 318 was the first N.Y.C. school to embark on this journey upstream. In 1997 a 10 gallon tank was rigged to simulate stream water. Submergible pumps were used to create flow and tubing was coiled through a small refrigerator to chill the water. Approximately 150 fry emerged from the 200 eggs but in the end only one survivor, Angelous, was released into Willowemoc river upstate in the Catskills (part of the NYC watershed). In the summer of 1998 Joan Stoliar and T.G.F. raised funds to create the Trout Stream System (designed by Chris Cefola). The 250 gallons of cold water supported over 500 fingerlings many of which were released in May of 1999 in the Willowemoc and the Beaverkill. In the 1999/2000 program we started with fewer eggs and in the spring we released a healthy batch of 63 fingerlings into the Willowemoc.
The I.S. 318 program is now run by David Bordi. For more information please contact him at I.S. 318.
