Project Roots Community Garden & Outdoor Classroom

Project Roots is a 'GreenThumb' Community Garden and outdoor learning laboratory. Once an abandoned city lot and illegal dump site, in 1995 Project Roots blossomed into a safe haven for local schools and residents to grow plants, learn about nature and enjoy. There are over a dozen vegetable beds managed by various classes and neighbors. The outdoor classroom includes a stage with amphitheater-style benches. A grape arbor, fruit trees and native trees offer shade. Other features include a compost area, picnic tables, greenhouse and murals. All structures were designed and built by volunteers, including; students, school staff, school administrators, local residents and members of various greening organizations. The original design was created with the assistance of GreenThumb's landscape architect, Edith Kean

Project Roots is currently protected by a recent transfer of property to NYC Parks & Recreation BUT there are many local community gardens which are NOT protected and thus need your support! Contact your local greening organization (some links are listed below) or community board to see how you can help in the fight to preserve OPEN SPACE!!! A city wide Mapping Project is in effect to verify the existence of garden/green spaces and abandoned city property.
