IS 318: TROUT UPDATE #4
Welcome to the I.S. 318 trout update. This is your eighth grade
TV star Christian Diaz Jr., and his sidekick Vas. Recently we
have added screens on the filter tubes so that when we release
them into the big tank, they will not get sucked into the filtration
system. Mr. Arezzo increased the current of the tank to keep the
water better filtered. We also added a ruler into the compartment
to measure the trout. The ruler shows up well on the trout-cam
and anyone is now able to measure the fish when they visit. The
trout are relatively larger than the last report. They are 20-25
mm long. Our trout are also eating all the food we place in the
tank for them. The trout are very active and come to the surface
for their food. We also made a trout schedule and everyone who
is involved in the program takes turns feeding the trout, three
times a day.
Since the trout hatched only 47 trout have died. What has puzzled
us is the fact that more than 30 trout have escaped into the main
tank through a small opening in the screen of the hatchery. The
trout in the hatchery have been move into the medium compartment
ahead of schedule to prevent further break-outs and to give the
fish more space (students decided that with so few passing on
the hatchery was a bit tight). The fish in the main compartment
are difficult to catch and for now they seem to be eating and
doing well. It may make an for interesting comparison study.
Today the students from PS 250 were able to see the tank for the first time.
We hope to have a new homepage up and running by the new year.
Hope you are enjoying the mild temperatures outside the Trout
Tank System,
