Measures of Distinction
National Leadership
* Dr. Herbert Pardes, vice president
for Health Sciences and dean of the Faculty of Medicine, served as chairman
of the Association of American Medical Colleges. He also was elected president
of the Associated Medical Schools of New York, a consortium of 13 schools
in the state that focuses resources of the medical schools on state and
national issues affecting medical education, medical care, and research.
* Dr. Audrey S. Penn, professor of
neurology, became deputy director of the National Institute of Neurological
Disorders and Stroke at NIH.
* Dr. Robert B. Mellins, professor
of pediatrics, assumed the presidency of the Fleischner Society.
* The Physicians Scientific Society selected
Dr. Darrick E. Antell, assistant clinical professor of plastic and
reconstructive surgery, as president.
* Dr. Donald O. Quest, acting chairman
of neurological surgery, was appointed secretary/treasurer of the American
Board of Neurological Surgery.
* The Federation of American Societies for
Experimental Biology has benefited from three years of leadership by Dr.
Samuel C. Silverstein. Dr. Silverstein served FASEB as vice president,
president, past president, and chairman of the public affairs advisory
committee.
* Dr. Harold Dick, professor and chairman
of orthopaedic surgery, served as president of the American Orthopaedic
Association during 1995-96 and is president-elect of the American Board
of Orthopaedic Surgery.
* Dr. David J. Birnbach, director of
obstetric anesthesiology at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, became
president-elect of the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology.
* The American Association for Women Radiologists
elected Dr. Karen S. Fountain, associate clinical professor of radiation
oncology, to its national board of directors.
