Physical Therapy Centralized Application Service (PTCAS)

Columbia participates in the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS) sponsored by the American Physical Therapy Association and administered by Liaison International (LI), an educational information technology company.

Applicants will apply online using the PTCAS application, which will be available through the Columbia web site on July 15, 2009. The program’s application deadline is December 15 to be considered for the Class of 2013 matriculating September 2010. PTCAS will begin to mail completed applications to the program the week of August 18. The program uses a rolling admissions process with interviews beginning in November. It is strongly recommended that applications be filed and completed prior to the deadline date.

To learn more about the PTCAS application prior to the July 15 start date, visit the PTCAS web site at www.ptcas.org Columbia’s participation in the PTCAS will help simplify the application process. Applicants will use a single Web-based application and one set of supporting documentation to apply to multiple physical therapy programs.

Student and Faculty Kudos

Two students (Class of 2009) will be receiving prestigious scholarships, by competition, from the American Physical Therapy Association. Abigail Gillard the Mary McMillan, which recognizes outstanding students in their final year of study with superior capabilities and Carlos Mercedes the Minority Scholarship, which also acknowledges and rewards high scholastic performance. This is the third year in a row that a Columbia student has been honored with a Mary McMillan Scholarship. Rami Said was a recipient in 2007 and Lonnie Stewart in 2008.

Four 2nd year students have received, by competition, Rudin Foundation Scholarships: Jamie Barish, Sarre Geller, Allyn Susko and Jennifer Zellers. Second year student Shannon Harrington has been award, also by competition, a Donna Lynn Mushkin Memorial Scholarship for a demonstrated commitment to a career in pediatric physical therapy.

Six faculty and 19 students presented their research via poster presentations at the Combined Sections Meeting, APTA, Las Vegas, NV, February 2009.

Dr. Ashwini Rao has been appointed as Associate Editor of the American Journal of Occupational Therapy. He is also a co-investigator on a new NIH RO1 on "Pathogenesis of Essential Tremor”.

Dr. Kevin Wong won the Research Poster Award from the APTA Section on Women’s Health for his study "Analysis of Lower-Extremity Gait Before, During, and After Pregnancy".

Welcome to the Program in Physical Therapy Website

The site has been designed to be used as a resource that highlights our entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree program, our faculty, students and alumni. Columbia is one of the oldest physical therapy programs in the country, having graduated more than 2200 clinicians since our inception in 1942. The program’s success is in large part due to the dedication of our faculty, students, alumni and clinicians who promote physical therapy on a daily basis. The program attracts a diverse student body that has gone on to excel in their professional careers as master clinicians, educators and researchers. The future of physical therapy is in the hands of today’s students. Educating the next generation is crucial to ensure that the profession is prepared to meet the healthcare challenges ahead.

Please take the opportunity to browse through our website. In it you will learn why Columbia’s DPT program is nationally ranked and see highlights of the research initiatives of the faculty and students. We are proud to be an integral part of Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons; a world class institution in a world class city with a unique cultural and urban environment.
