Fatigue

Fatigue or tiredness: A feeling of weariness, weakness, exhaustion or lack of energy.

Factors which can contribute to fatigue: anemia; insufficient protein, vitamins, minerals and calories in the diet; disruption of sleep and rest; inactivity; stress, anxiety or depression.

Patients may feel the symptom of fatigue in varying degrees while undergoing radiation therapy. This symptom will usually not present itself prior to 2-3 weeks of radiation treatment, and will usually begin to subside gradually 3-4 weeks following completion of radiation therapy.

Hints to alleviate the symptom of fatigue:

Attempt to eat several small meals daily. Increased carbohydrates will give you added energy.
Get more rest, take naps whenever possible.

Attempt some regular exercise daily. Walking is especially encouraged.

Prepare meals ahead of time and freeze them.

Accept offers of help.

Increase your daily fluid intake. Water and/or apple juice is recommended.

Match your activity to your energy level -- DO NOT OVERDO IT!

Attempt to keep a regular sleep schedule.

It is important that you inform the nurse or radiation oncologist of all presenting symptoms as soon as possible.
