Nutrition and Common Sense

For Patients NOT Experiencing Diarrhea or Gastrointestinal Distress

During radiation therapy it is important to eat nutrients, such as protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals, to carry on normal body functions.

The following guides are suggested for a balanced diet during radiation therapy:

Drink 2 cups of milk a day. Substitutes may include cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt or ice cream.

Attempt to decrease your total fat intake by substituting eggs, fish poultry, beans, peas, peanut butter, or nuts for meats and meat products.

Eat or drink 2 or more half-cup servings of fruit or fruit juice daily.

Eat 2 or more half-cup servings of vegetables daily.

Eat 4 or more servings of bread or cereal.

Eat high-fiber foods, such as whole grain cereals, whole grain breads and pastas, and raw fruits and vegetables.

Limit consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Limit consumption of salt-cured, smoked and nitrite-cured foods.

Drink a sufficient amount - approximately 4-6 glasses of fluid daily (preferably water or apple juice).

Stimulate appetite with light exercise.

Avoid foods low in protein and avoid empty calories (i.e., soda).

Do not attempt to diet during radiation therapy. Eat nourishing meals.
