East foods that are soft, smooth and moist. Avoid spicy foods. Eat foods that are at room temperature, rather than very hot or cold- they are easier to swallow. |

Suck on sugar free hard candies or Popsicles for Dry Mouth. |

Avoid alcohol and tobacco products. |
 |
Keep lips moist with lip salves. |
 |
Do not attempt to diet during radiation therapy. Eat nourishing meals and avoid empty calories. Increase liquid intake to 8-10 glasses of fluid daily, preferably water or apple juice. In order to keep your mouth moist, carry a filled water bottle. |

Avoid coarse, dry foods, such as crackers, potato chips, popcorn, pretzels, raw vegetables, etc. |

High calorie drinks, such as liquid supplements or shakes will provide extra calories, protein and vitamins Avoid juices other than apple. |

Consider the use of a cool vaporizer while sleeping. This will increase the moisture in the air. |
 |
Dental care is essential. When the saliva is decreased, tooth and/or gum disease may occur. Fluoride treatments, as well as proper oral hygiene, will help protect your teeth. |

After eating and at bedtime, rinse your mouth with the following solution:

1 teaspoon Salt

1 teaspoon Baking Soda
|
| |
Mix in 1 quart of warm water and keep at room temperature
|

Use a very soft toothbrush: soften it in warm water before using. |

Do not use commercial mouthwash preparations unless approved by your radiation oncology physician.

Avoid foods that adhere to the roof of your mouth. |
 |
Take small bites and chew well. |
