Nomination and Selection Process

Candidates are nominated for the Calderone Prize by a select group of public health professionals. The medalist is chosen by a 12-member selection committee comprised of the following representatives: the president or president elect of ASPH; an eminent basic scientist; representatives of two foundations; a representative from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; an editor of a public health journal; the current dean of the Mailman School of Public Health (serves as chair of the committee); a previous prize winner; and a government representative (for example, a health commissioner).
