Background:
Dr. Gary Heiman's primary research interest is in the intersection between genetics, psychiatry, and neurology. He is the principal investigator on a study investigating the genetic relationship between epilepsy and depression and was the co-principal investigator on a study investigating the psychiatric manifestations of the DYT1 dystonia gene. Dr. Heiman is also using computer simulations to investigate the extent to which population stratification affects case-control genetic association studies and is involved in a large prospective, population-based cohort study in Geneva Switzerland, the focus of which is the examination of the relative importance of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors on longevity. He has extensive experience in data collection for genetic linkage studies including studies of dystonia and panic disorder.
Dr. Heiman is the co-director of the Genetics in Epidemiology course (P8405) and is the chair of the "Columbia University Seminar in Genetic Epidemiology". He is currently the coordinator of the "Genetics of Complex Disorders Training Program" and is the Webmaster for the Department of Epidemiology. He also serves on the Steering Committee for the Mailman School of Public Health.
