OVERVIEW

The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) prepares students for positions of leadership in health care policy and management by giving them the knowledge and skills necessary to address fundamental issues in today’s complex and rapidly changing health care environment. The Department’s mission is to advance theory and practice that improve the public’s health, prevent disease, and strengthen the health care system and its component organizations.

Our mission is fulfilled through research, education, and service that address the development and implementation of health policy and the administrative functioning of health systems and services. We believe that health policy and health care management are interdependent and our research and education programs are informed by this view.

We approach health policy and management issues, including access to health care, organization and administration of health care delivery, and financing and quality of care, from a range of disciplinary and professional perspectives, in historical and social context, and informed by empirical evidence.

The goals of the Department of Health Policy and Management, along with their associated objectives, are to:

· Prepare students for positions of leadership in healthcare policy and management by giving them the knowledge and skills necessary to address management, policy, and/or effectiveness and outcomes issues in today’s complex and rapidly changing health care environment.

· Undertake research to assist in the effort to reform and more effectively manage the healthcare system and to improve the public’s health.

· Encourage faculty and student participation in service initiatives with
health care providers and with private and public health institutions and agencies through consultative services, the practicum experience, and volunteer activities.

Our faculty are full-time university based researchers and part-time adjunct practitioners who are recognized experts in their fields. These practitioners are especially adept at relating the realities of the workplace to classroom theory. In addition to being excellent and accessible teachers, they provide a valuable resource to students by offering opportunities for research projects, tutorials, part-time internships, and practica.

HPM students are taught the fundamentals of public health philosophy and practice, as swell as the analytical skills and methodological tools necessary for both health policy makers and managers. Full-time students complete a three month practicum (internship) during the summer following their first year of study.  Upon graduation students choose jobs in the public, non-profit, and for-profit sectors of the health care system.

The Department of Health Policy and Management offers several degree programs. There are full-time programs in health policy, health services management, and effectiveness and outcomes research. Our part time programs include an Executive MPH Program in Health Services Management and Columbia-on-the-Job.
