DOCTORS OF THE WORLD ANNOUNCES ALLAN ROSENFIELD AS
2006 HEALTH AND HUMAN RIGHTS LEADERSHIP AWARDS HONOREE

On May 10, 2006, friends and supporters of Doctors of the World-USA ("DOW") honored its 2006 Health and Human Rights Leadership Awards honorees. Allan Rosenfield, MD, dean of the Mailman School of Public Health, was being recognized for his efforts in promoting health and human rights around the world.

In selecting Dr. Rosenfield to receive the award, DOW cited his leadership in global health. A consummate educator, clinician and advocate, Dr. Rosenfield is a pioneer in the fight against HIV/AIDS, a champion of women's rights around the world, and a passionate believer in the link between health and human rights in policy and in practice.

Also honored with its leadership award was Alicia Keys, Grammy award-winning recording artist, musician and philanthropist, who is the co-founder and global ambassador of Keep A Child Alive, a nonprofit organization that provides life-saving AIDS medicines directly to children and families in Africa. This year's honorees also include the corps of dedicated volunteers working on several major DOW projects in Chiapas, Mexico.

"We are pleased to have such a dedicated and prolific group of honorees for this year's event", said Tom Dougherty, Executive Director of Doctors of the World-USA.  "The work Dr. Rosenfield, Ms. Keys, and our Chiapas volunteers do around the world is integral to our core mission of making health a human right."

Co-Chairs for the evening are David Hamburg, MD, DeWitt Distinguished Scholar, Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and President Emeritus, Carnegie Corporation of New York; and, John Demsey, Estée Lauder Global President, M·A·C Cosmetics Chairman, and M·A·C AIDS Fund.

For over 15 years, Doctors of the World-USA has been building the capacity of communities around the world to improve the health of excluded populations while promoting, protecting, and restoring human rights. Doctors of the World-USA focuses its efforts on women's health, AIDS and TB, orphans and vulnerable children, and survivors of human rights abuses.
