Allan Rosenfield, MD, At the annual meeting of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Washington, D.C. on May 9th, Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health® honored Allan Rosenfield, MD, dean of the Mailman School of Public Health with its 2006 Kenneth J. Ryan, MD Physician Leadership Award. The award is presented by Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health ® (PRCH) and members of the Ryan family to a physician whose career-wide efforts have resulted in substantial improvements to reproductive health care. Dr. Rosenfield was selected for his visionary leadership and undaunted commitment to improving reproductive health through research, medical education, and advocacy. "Quite literally, millions of women and children around the world, particularly in the developing world, have benefited from Dr. Rosenfield's active involvement," said Fredric D. Frigoletto Jr., MD, a member of the program committee for the award. "There are few people who so embody the needs and aspiration of women and their reproductive health, and fewer still who have provided such outstanding leadership for innovative directions to achieve them." The presentation of this year's Physician Leadership Award to Dr. Rosenfield includes a panel discussion on scientific integrity featuring leading experts from politics and medicine. Speakers are: Representative Henry Waxman (D-California); Laura Myers, MD, an expert in fetal anesthesia; and Michael Greene, MD, associate editor of the New England Journal of Medicine. Harry S. Jonas, MD, recipient of the first Kenneth J. Ryan Physician Leadership Award in 2004, moderated the panel. Wendy Chavkin, MD, MPH, professor of Clinical Population and Family Health at the Mailman School and professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, College of Physicians and Surgeons, will present the award to Dr. Rosenfield. Dr. Chavkin currently serves as the chair to the Board of Directors of Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health. Kenneth J. Ryan, M.D., Memorial Program honors his pioneering legacy and Founded in 1992, the mission of Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health® is to enable concerned physicians to take a more active and visible role in support of universal reproductive health.
