| ALLAN ROSENFIELD, MD, DEAN OF THE MAILMAN SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH, May 8, 2006 -- Allan Rosenfield, MD, dean of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, received the New York Academy of Medicine's Stephen Smith Award for Lifetime Achievement in Public Health. The award, established by the Academy's Board in 2004, was presented to Dr. Rosenfield at its Spring Slated Meeting of Academy Fellows on May 9th. The New York Academy of Medicine, the country's premier urban health policy and intervention center, focuses on enhancing the health of people living in cities through research, education, advocacy, and prevention. The Smith Award honors lifetime achievement of national or international significance for individuals who have contributed at the highest levels of research, education, and programs. "All of us at the Academy feel deeply gratified that you have accepted the 2006 Smith Award, and I look forward to presenting the award to you personally," said Jeremiah A. Barondess, MD, president of the Academy. The black-tie dinner event attracts Academy Fellows, staff, and guests, and includes the presentation of awards to leaders in science and government. Kofi Annan, Secretary General-United Nations, will present the Academy's 159th Anniversary Discourse on "Global Implications of Disease." The Academy's Stated Meeting started in 1847 and marks the anniversary of the founding of the Academy that year. In addition to a major address on an important subject related to health, the event includes the presentation of Academy Awards for distinguished accomplishments in medicine, scientific research and service to the Academy. |
