Sherry Glied Elected for Membership in the Institute of Medicine and AcademyHealth

In October, Sherry A.M. Glied, professor and chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management, was elected for membership by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), one of the highest honors in the fields of medicine and health. Across the University, Columbia now has 48 members in this esteemed organization.

Dr. Glied is among the 70 new IOM members and foreign associates announced this month. They were chosen through a highly selective process that recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing the medical science, healthcare, and public health fields. Dr. Glied's research focuses on health policy reform, the financing of healthcare services, and mental health care policy.

The IOM is part of the National Academies, which also includes the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and National Research Council. Its structure is unique in its role as both an honorific membership group and advisory organization. Members are expected to volunteer on study committees to serve as a national resource for independent, scientifically informed analysis and recommendations on issues related to human health.

AcademyHealth, the professional organization for health services researchers, policy analysts, and practitioners, has elected Sherry Glied for membership. The Washington D.C.-based group is the leading, non-partisan resource for the best in health research and policy, promoting interaction across the health research and policy arenas by bringing together a broad spectrum of players to share their perspectives, learn from each other, and strengthen their working relationships.

Dr. Glied will serve a four-year term beginning with AcademyHealth's Board meeting in early December.
