Researchers Discover Key Mechanism by which Lethal Ebola and Marburg Viruses Cause Disease
Researchers in the Greene Infectious Disease Laboratory, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Caribbean Primate Research Center have discovered a key mechanism by which the Filoviruses, Ebola and Marburg, cause disease. The identification of an amino acid sequence in Filoviruses that results in the rapid depression of immunological response is described in the December 2006 issue of The FASEB Journal. Using this information, researchers can begin to develop new drugs to stop these devastating diseases.

Noise Levels on NYC Transit System Can Cause Hearing Loss
In a new survey of noise levels of the New York City transit system, researchers at the Mailman School of Public Health found that exposure to noise levels in subways has the potential to exceed recommended guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Global Health Leaders Reflect on 40 Years of Advances in the Field

The Mailman School has been active in the global health field for four decades. In 2005, the School launched a Global Health Track that embraces a multidisciplinary approach to teaching and training. To commemorate faculty involvement in the field and to welcome new students in the Track, the School held a panel discussion led by Pamela Collins, MD, director of the Global Health Track, on Wednesday, September 6, entitled "Reflections on the Past, Directions for the Future."

Harlem Business Wellness Initiative Improves Health of Harlem Employees
On Thursday, September 28, the lobby of the New York City Mission Society's Minisink Townhouse in Central Harlem buzzed with members of the Harlem Business Wellness Initiative (HBWI) and partnering healthcare professionals who had gathered to call attention to the many employees of small Harlem businesses with little or no healthcare.

Sherry Glied Elected for Membership in the Institute of Medicine and AcademyHealth
In October, Sherry A.M. Glied, professor and chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management, was elected for membership by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), one of the highest honors in the fields of medicine and health. Across the University, Columbia now has 48 members in this esteemed organization.

Joseph Graziano Selected for NIEHS Council
Joseph Graziano, PhD, associate dean for Research and professor of Environmental Health Sciences and Pharmacology, has been appointed to the National Advisory Environmental Health Sciences Council. The council advises the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institutes of Health, and the director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) on matters relating to the conduct and support of research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs. In addition, council members respond to agency requests for special scientific reviews and public presentations.

Interdepartmental Doctoral Fellowship Program in Gender, Sexuality, and Health Studies Planned for Fall 2007
Beginning in September 2007, the Mailman School of Public Health is partnering with the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University to launch the nation's first multidisciplinary doctoral training program in gender, sexuality, and health. The unique undertaking will prepare students for research and teaching careers focused on the reproductive and sexual health of citizens in the U.S. and abroad.
