Three Mailman Professors Lauded for Dynamic Teaching Skills and Innovative Coursework

Linda F. Cushman, PhD, associate clinical professor of Population and Family Health, is being recognized this year for her deep commitment to teaching with two prestigious awards. The first is the Mailman School’s Teaching Excellence award, which is the highest distinction the School bestows on a faculty member for excellence in teaching.

Said Andrew Davidson, PhD, executive vice dean, of Dr. Cushman’s award, “Linda is one of our stars at the Mailman School. Her methodological acumen is matched by her ability to impart to our students the skills and knowledge essential to the practice of public health.”

Further, Dr. Cushman and Roger D. Vaughan, DrPH, associate professor of clinical Biostatistics, are two of eight faculty members from across the CUMC campus selected as 2007 fellows of the Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy. Created in 2005, the Academy seeks to recognize excellence, reward achievement, and promote innovation among faculty members on Columbia’s Health Sciences campus.

In addition, this year the Academy awarded Ronald Bayer, PhD, professor of Sociomedical Sciences, the Glenda Garvey Teaching Academy Curriculum Award for the development of a Health Sciences campus-wide course on the Ethics of Public Health.

“It is a fitting tribute to both the School and our faculty that the Academy is recognizing the work of Drs. Cushman, Vaughn, and Bayer,” said Ian Lapp, associate dean for Academic Affairs and Education. “I congratulate all three on these exceptional honors.”
