Katy Quissell is a second-year MPH student in the Sexuality and Health program. Her interests and work focus on the social justice implications of domestic and international reproductive and sexual health. Currently, she is in the process of completing her MIP, which examines the efficacy of contemporary advocacy around sexuality education. Katy has conducted extensive interviews with many of the nation's leading sexual health organizations and advocates in an attempt to understand the core elements of effective messaging, issue promotion, outreach, and grassroots
organizing.
Katy's work outside of the classroom reflects her
passion for health and social justice promotion as well. Katy is currently the Co-Chair of Columbia's Public Health Students for Reproductive Freedom (PHSRF), and has been in charge of organizing the Spring Advocacy Series by coordinating student participation in the Get the Facts NY campaign for sexuality education, and initiating a project to promote sexual and reproductive rights within the APHA.
Katy is also working for Terry McGovern in Population and Family Health on the Women's Health and Human Rights Initiative. Prior to coming to Columbia, Katy worked for the Feminist Majority Foundation, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and HIPS (Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive)—a sex worker outreach program in Washington, D.C.
