Alwyn Cohall, MD, Director of Project S.T.A.Y.,
receives Shirley Gordon Public Policy Leadership Award
from Family Planning Advocates of New York State.

On November 16, 2006, Alwyn Cohall, MD, Director of Project S.T.A.Y., was honored with the Shirley Gordon Public Policy Leadership Award by Family Planning Advocates of New York State. Project S.T.A.Y. (Services To Assist Youth) provides sensitive and supportive HIV counseling and testing to high-risk youth, as well as comprehensive medical, psychosocial and case management services to more than 40 adolescents and young adults living with HIV. Project S.T.A.Y. is part of the Ambulatory Care Network and is affiliated with Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health (Division of Sociomedical Sciences, Harlem Health Promotion Center). Project S.T.A.Y. operates the Mobile Health Education and Screening Team (MEHS), which provides multimedia sexual education presentations coupled with painless, non-invasive screening tests for sexually transmitted infections and HIV. The MHES Team reaches out to NYC alternative high schools and community-based agencies working with youth who are at high risk for HIV infection and who may not have previously sought HIV/STI testing and treatment. The program is designed to increase awareness about STIs, HIV and pregnancy prevention, and enhance opportunities for youth to obtain health care services. Dr. Cohall and Project S.T.A.Y. were recently awarded a contract from the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to implement " E.C. as 1, 2, 3" , a program to improve access to emergency contraception for teens in alternative high schools. The new program is supported by a 10-member Youth Advisory Board. Dr. Cohall is in his third decade of service as a physician to children, adolescents, and adults in Northern Manhattan, and has authored more than 40 articles on a wide range of medical and health policy issues. Dr. Cohall has joint appointments in the Department of Sociomedical Sciences and the Department of Population and Family Health.
