Dear New Students,

Welcome to the Mailman School of Public Health and New York City! On behalf of the Student Government Association, we warmly extend our best wishes to you as you begin to start this new and exciting journey! We hope that you have the opportunity to experience all the amazing things that this institution and city have to offer.

Your involvement in orientation will provide you with the opportunity to meet student leaders and the various student organizations. The Student Government is comprised of an executive board, standing committees, and governs seven student organizations that include:\
  • Black and Latino Student Caucus (BLSC)
  • Future Healthcare Leaders (FHL)
  • Global Health Forum (GHF)
  • Subcommittees: Health Justice Taskforce
  • Gulf Coast Recovers (GCR)
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health Action Group (SHAG)
  • Students for Environmental Awareness (SEA)
  • Doctoral Student Association (DSA)
  • Queer Health Taskforce (QHT)
  • Skills Experience and Resources for Conflict and Health (SEARCH)

The purpose of the Student Government Association is to be the voice, as well as the forum, for student needs and concerns, in terms of both, the campus level as well as the entire field of public health. The different student organizations focus on a variety of issues that include health leadership, student diversity, global issues, sexual and reproductive health, and environmental awareness in the field of public health. We encourage you to bring your ideas and concerns to any of the many events that the student organizations host throughout the year. These events try to bring together individuals and ideas in order to improve and maximize on the already incredible academic and social environment of the school.

We look forward to meeting you during orientation week and assisting you with any questions or concerns. We hope that you have a fun, exciting, and insightful experience at orientation and first semester here at Columbia University!
