The Department of Urology at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons offers 4 th year medical students the opportunity to interact with our department. There are a few different opportunities available to you.

  1. Subinternship Adult Urology
  2. Subinternship Pediatric Urology
  3. Clinical Outcomes Research Rotation
  4. Laboratory Research Rotation

Subinternship Pediatric and Adult

The objectives of this rotation are primarily to expose the subintern to a more intensive experience managing complex urologic conditions and further your understanding of what a career in urologic surgery will entail. In addition rotations such as this serve as a means of evaluating the potential for future accomplishments in the field.

During your month on the service, we expect you to function as a direct member of the house staff team to which you are assigned. In addition you will be assigned on a daily basis to assist in both the operating room as well as in the cystocopy suite on a rotational basis. These assignments will be made nightly by the adult Chief Residents and will involve exposure to all components of adult urology including urologic oncology, voiding dysfunction, endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery, infertility and erectile dysfunction. Outpatient experiences will be available via the Allen pavilion clinic as well.

During your time with us you will be evaluated based on your professionalism, willingness to learn, interaction with patients and staff, as well as growth in your fund of knowledge. You will be required to prepare and present one formal grand rounds presentation on a topic of your choosing based on a clinical case in which you were involved.

Each subintern will be assigned a unique faculty mentor to provide direct support counseling and teaching throughout the rotation. A scheduled time will be available to meet with Dr. McKiernan, the Course Director after 2 weeks of the rotation to provide feedback and incorporate your suggestions for making the rotation more rewarding.

Clinical Outcomes Research Rotation

A unique opportunity now exists with in the framework of the Clinical Research Division of our department to offer 4 th year medical students a one month rotation focused on learning the skills necessary to participate in clinical outcomes research. This is an evolving rotation that will encompass biostatistics, hands on project design and implementation, presentation, and critical writing skills. This opportunity is made possible by our dedicated faculty in oncology, pediatric urology, and voiding dysfunction who are available to mentor and instruct students in this rapidly evolving field. It is the expectation of the faculty that participation in this endeavor would not only provide the subintern with an outstanding base of knowledge but also result in the submission of both research abstracts as well as peer review manuscripts.

Lab Research Rotation

Students also have the opportunity to spend a month in the laboratory with Cathy L. Mendelsohn, PhD, Assistant Professor of Urologic Sciences. Dr. Mendelsohn's lab is currently pursuing two types of projects both aimed at understanding urogenital tract development.

  1. Investigating the molecular and cellular events important for formation of connections between the ureter and the bladder.
  2. Studying the role of renal stroma in patterning the embryonic kidney. Past students have been able to publish and present their findings at national medical meetings and in major medical publications from the time spent with Dr. Mendelsohn. For more information on Dr. Mendelsohn, please visit her website at: http://www.research.hs.columbia.edu/Faculty_Profiles/profiles/mendelsohn_cl.html
