What are the causes of FSD?
Research is just beginning to identify causes of FSD which can be physical, social, psychological and cultural. Some hormonal disorders contribute to low desire and poor arousal. Gynecologic problems affecting the uterus, ovaries, or external genitalia can lead to pain with sexual activity. Research is currently addressing how hysterectomy and menopause affect sexual functioning. Many couples experience sexual problems while undergoing infertility or treatment for gynecologic or breast cancer. Depression and anxiety can contribute to many sexual problems. Those who are in poor health due to any chronic medical problem are at higher risk for FSD. Fatigue and stress are very common causes of FSD, as are relationship conflicts. Women may themselves may be satisfied with their sexual functioning, but differences in partner expectations may lead to conflict about sex in the relationship. Women and their partners may have sexual problems due to poor communication and limited knowledge about sex. |
