Introduction
FSD is an acronym for female sexual dysfunction. FSD refers to a group of different sexual problems experienced by women. These are commonly divided into 4 categories which include problems with 1) desire (libido), 2) arousal (sexual excitement), 3) orgasm (climax), 4) pain with sexual activity. All of these problems may have psychological or physical causes. For example, depressed or fatigued women often have low sexual desire and those who take certain medications can experience decreased arousal. Importantly, all women experience changes in sexual functioning during daily life. Dysfunction means that these changes have caused distress for the woman personally or in the context of her relationship. Recent research indicates that most Americans are generally satisfied with their sexual relationships. However, within the context of these relationships, sexual problems are common in women, as well as men. Sociologists from the University of Chicago conducted a nationwide survey of thousands of Americans. They found that the most common problem among women was low desire, 30% of women had experience at least a few months with low libido in the last year. About 20% reported lack of pleasure with sex, problems getting aroused, problems with orgasm, or pain with sex. |
