Introduction
Peyronie’s disease is the development of fibrosis (scar tissue) inside the penis that frequently causes penile curvature, circular deformity (hourglass deformity), shortening of the penis, pain with erection and/or difficulty with erection.
Francois de LaPeyronie first described the disease that would become his namesake over 250 years ago in France, and doctors are just now beginning to understand what causes the disease and to develop successful treatments for it. Peyronie’s disease occurs in than 1-3% of men. But for those effected, it can be a severe hindrance to healthy sexual functioning. In its most progressive state, the disease can cause curvature of the penis so severe that it prevents sexual intercourse.
