Dr. Stone completed his basic science years in medicine at the Morehouse School of Medicine and ultimately graduated with his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Alabama (in Birmingham ) in 1985. He was also commissioned a Captain in the United States Air Force Medical Corp.
He received his general surgical and urology training at the Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He spent a portion of his residency training at Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center . He furthered his training in urology by completing a 2-year clinical fellowship in neuro-urology and erectile dysfunction and a 1-year research fellowship in erectile dysfunction. His early mentors were Drs. Roberto Reid (Chief of Urology at the Weiler Hospital of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine) and Arnold Melman (Chairman of Urology at Montefiore Medical Center ).
He began work withing the American Cancer Society in 1991. This relationship leads to the creation of the New York Urban Prostate Cancer Early Detection Program which he started in 1993. This free program has screened over 5000 men and educated over 55,000 men.
He completed his training in June of 1994 and was recruited to Columbia University and Harlem Hospital as an Assistant Professor of Urology. He has specialized in uro-oncology and urological prosthetics. He is skilled in the nerve sparing and bladder neck sparing radical retropubic prostatectomy. He is also one of few urologists in the region skilled at the minimally invasive radical perineal prostatectomy. Dr. Stone is also nationally known for his skills in prosthetic surgery. He has inserted hundreds of penile prosthesis with an infection and malfunction rate below the national averages. He has emerged as one of the local experts with the male sling. He currently instructs other urologists on insertion techniques of these devices. He is has also developed a technique of cryo-assisted partial nephrectomy for the excision of renal masses.
