Objectives:

Drug use is a major public health problem because of the multiple effects of drug abuse on users, their families, and their communities. Although overall use has decreased over time, heavy use has remained constant, indicating the importance of developing effective interventions to prevent or reduce the heavy or frequent consumption of drugs.

Over the past few decades. research in drug addiction has shown that biological as well as social factors need to be considered in order to implement effective treatment strategies. With the improvement of existing treatments and development of new treatments based on behavioral and neurobiological sciences, this research has yielded promising new treatment approaches.

This course is designed for clinicians, researchers, administrators, policy makers, social workers and those in related professions, patients, their families, and the general public. The faculty, recognized leaders in research and education, will provde an overview of the new research findings in drug addiction with emphasis on advances in biological, psychological and social treatments.

At the conclusion of the course, mental health professionals can expect to have acquired a comprehensive understanding of the latest developments in drug addiction research and should recognize the most appropriate prevention, early intervention and treatment methods available, thereby reducing the prevalence, morbidity and mortality of drug abuse and addiction. Patients, family members and consumers will be better able to seek out appropriate treatments.
