The Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center

The $13.5 million gift from Russ and Angelica Berrie to Columbia University will result in the creation of the only comprehensive diabetes research and treatment center in the NewYork tri-state area. The Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center will be a world-class diabetes center—drawing on current research and clinical advances at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.

An estimated 16 million Americans have diabetes—one of the leading causes of death and disability. Approximately 10 percent of the nation’s diabetic population lives in the New York tri-state area. The Center will be a source for diabetes care, education, and research under the direction of Dr. Robin Goland, Florence Irving Assistant Professor of Medicine.

“The center will be the first comprehensive mutidisciplinary diabetes center in the New York area offering patients with diabetes both state-of-the-art clinical care for all aspects of their diabetes as well as access to world-class research into the cause and complications of this important, common, and chronic disease,” says Dr. Goland. The center also will foster the diabetes research programs in progress at Columbia by bringing those efforts together under one roof.
