Student Affairs
Admissions office busy with record number of applications

Up to 500 inquiries per week and a record number of applications were received this spring, about 15 percent more than this time last year. Interest in the school has grown over the last several years.

Associate Dean for Student Affairs William Van Wie, Dr.P.H., comments that surging interest is twofold. "First, in the '90's, many graduate schools have grown due to the tight economy and the more competitive job environment. Secondly, interest in public health has increased due to the intense media focus on the health care crisis and reform efforts. Even after the failure of the Clinton initiative, health care continues to be in the news."

With more applicants, the school has become more selective--accepting a smaller percentage than in past years. Nevertheless, the number of enrolled students continues to increase, with 317 new students last year.

The student body has also changed demographically. According to Van Wie, "In the '60s and '70s there was substantially more financial support for graduate students, and the student body was largely full-time. Since then we have moved toward part-time enrollment- -now about 60 percent of students. In recent years, though, students on average are now taking more credits."
